Official Launch of the ARC Research Hub for Protected Cropping

October 28, 2025

The ARC Research Hub for Protected Cropping (PC Hub) was officially launched on 23 October 2025, marking an exciting new chapter in advancing sustainable, innovative, and resilient protected cropping systems across Australia.

The launch event brought together researchers, industry partners, and LTU representatives to celebrate the Hub’s vision for strengthening Australia’s horticultural and medicinal agriculture sectors through cutting-edge science, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

A Celebration of Collaboration and Innovation

We were honoured to welcome Senator Lisa Darmanin (Senator for Victoria), representing The Hon Jason Clare MP, Minister for Education, who officially launched the Hub.

Our sincere thanks also go to the Australian Research Council (ARC) for their invaluable support, and to Professor Alastair McEwan, ARC Academic Director – Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, for joining us on this special occasion.

We were also delighted to celebrate this milestone with Professor Theo Farrell, Vice-Chancellor and President of La Trobe University, and Professor Chris Pakes, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President (Research & Innovation). Their leadership and continued support underscore La Trobe’s commitment to fostering research with real-world impact.

A Taste of Connection and Country

A highlight of the event was a live cooking demonstration by renowned Chef Mindy Woods, who showcased the richness of Australia’s native ingredients. Mindy’s inspiring presentation celebrated the deep connections between food, culture, and Country — and reflected the Hub’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

Looking Ahead

The launch was not only a celebration of achievement but also an affirmation of the collaborative spirit that defines the PC Hub. As the Hub moves forward, it will continue to bring together experts from research, industry, and community sectors to develop innovative solutions that ensure the long-term productivity and sustainability of protected cropping in Australia.
